HOW TO STAY SANE WHEN YOU ENCOUNTER ANGER

Hello there, friends of Unity Joy of Life!

I think the year was around 2001. I was the minister in Denver, Colorado, and there was this one person who came into the church super angry, and they were blaming me for their marriage having gone wrong, because they thought I didn't do a good enough wedding ceremony. Well, I became their punching bag. I mean they were angry, angry, angry and I was trying to kind of defend myself. But remember whatever you defend will come at you even in greater force. Well then I got angry and their anger was very contagious. And I was fixated on a limited perspective of being angry with them. Well, I decided I needed to step away, got in the car, went to the New Whole Foods, just right there in Cherry Creek, Colorado, and I'm trying to find a parking place and I couldn't find a parking place. Everybody and their mother was going shopping at the new Whole Foods! Well, I finally saw one. I put my blinker on and this person from out of nowhere comes in and starts to park there, and I just let them have the middle finger. Let me just say your minister gave the middle finger. And as the person got out of the car I was about ready to just let them have it, if you will. And I realized they went to my church. They were a part of my congregation. And they saw me, I saw them, and we were both so embarrassed. I found a parking place, I went into Whole Foods, I found her, and I just apologized. I said I was having a bad day.

But what I want you to know, my friends, I love that story because the only thing that keeps that anger alive is our commitment to it. And so if someone comes at you and they're committed to their anger, you don't have to match their anger. You can walk away, you can just let them be.

And that one experience, it just, what it did was it woke me up, it pointed me back home to treat others with loving kindness. Because just as anger is contagious, so is loving kindness.

So maybe, this week, be the contagious force of loving kindness. That's the only way to have peace on earth. If we just were that loving force with everyone that we meet, with loving kindness and be fixated on an open loving kindness perspective.

That's our commitment, not to anger. Our commitment is to kindness.

So I am keeping the faith for you, my friends.

Until next week, God bless you.
